To create an image of a human face or body in steel, the process begins with using steel rods to draw the forms in 3 dimensions. Using heat to bend the fine curves and welding to attach the parts together, I define the masses in this way. When I’ve laid down enough steel to define the features of the face and the pose, I weld in more steel to fill in gaps between rods thereby creating a plane of steel. Then I carve that region down to finely indicate the details and skin surfaces. The carving process leaves the final surface in a widely irregular set of patterns and negative spaces. The final finish depends on several factors, and ranges from polishing to a silvery polished look, left blackened from the work process, or left to rust. They can also be colored and protected with  powder coat or paints.
