There have been times when I’ve looked at a collection of items that are getting ready for disposal and wonder “what could and should be done instead of throwing this material away?” Occasionally I’m able to find good uses of the material by creating a sculpture from it. Many materials lend themselves readily to abstract forms and impressions, as well as conceptual work. Being as interested in the human form as I am I tend to try to make images that are at least anthropomorphic if not very representational. An example of this kind of sculpture would be “Transplantation”, in which I had just pruned the plum trees in my yard and had large piles of cuttings to get rid of. I decided to see if I could create a figurative sculpture. The resulting sculpture is a very playful “tree-man” , named “Transplantation”,who is apparently pulling himself up by his roots.
